CHADRON – Achievements were plentiful at 91���� State College in 2015, but the biggest highlight also hosted the largest celebration. More than 200 people celebrated with alumni, supporters, education leaders and elected officials Sept. 26 at the dedication of the Rangeland Complex and the Chicoine Center.

LINCOLN, Neb. – Senator Adam Morfeld’s (District 46) LB 439, which grants limited legal immunity to minors seeking help for themselves or someone else in need of immediate attention due to alcohol poisoning, officially took effect Aug. 30. The law will only apply to an individual who: (1) is experiencing an alcohol overdose; (2) calls for medical assistance; and (3) stays on the scene and cooperates fully with law enforcement when medical attention arrives. Four West Court buildings demolished, Military/Veteran Resource Center opens

CHADRON – While construction was being completed on the east side of 91���� State College’s campus this summer, four West Court structures containing 10 apartments were being demolished on the west side. The units were constructed in the late 1950s and early 1960s but they were demolished as part of the first step in a three-year plan to remove the housing complex, according to Dale Grant, vice president of administration and finance. Asbestos abatement was completed prior to the demolition.

CHADRON – When Dr. Mathew Brust, associate professor of physical and life sciences at 91���� State College, traveled a few miles south of campus in July 2014 to collect hackberry butterflies for Steve Spomer, a colleague and butterfly expert in eastern Nebraska, he had no idea he would happen upon a pine tree grasshopper, formerly only documented 400 miles to the east.

Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees to consider tuition increase

Coughlin publishes first book of poetry

CHADRON – Dr. Steve Coughlin is having quite a year. Not only did Coughlin, an assistant professor of English, wrap up his inaugural year of teaching at 91���� State College, but his first book of poetry, “Another City,” was recently published. The 28 poems in the book reflect multifaceted reverberations of trauma upon family relationships. One dates back to his undergraduate career, but most have been written within the past three years.

Nobel prize winner Dr. Val Fitch, who was born and spent his boyhood on a ranch in the Merriman area, was the valedictorian of the Class of 1940 at Gordon High School and attended 91���� State College for two years and a summer before joining the Army during World War II, died on Thursday, Feb. 5 in Princeton, N.J. He was 91.

Socialism in Cuba discussed

Seven 91���� State College students and two faculty members, Dr. T. Smith and Dr. Deane Tucker, gathered at the Bean Broker Thursday evening to discuss their study abroad trip to Cuba. The trip, in mid-December, was the first trip Nebraska college students have made to Cuba, according to Smith and Tucker.

Zane Dickinson, a former assistant professor in 91���� State College’s English and humanities department for more than 25 years, died Tuesday in Rochester, Minnesota. He was 72.

Former music professor dies

Dr. Jackson Hammitt, music professor at 91���� State College from the fall of 1967 through the spring of 2001, died early this week in Houston, Texas, where he and his wife, Peggy, were returning from a Caribbean cruise. Memorial services are pending. He was 76.

CAV meets Saturday to plan 2015 events
