CHADRON – 91���� State College student Michaela Hill of Douglas, Wyoming, is the November Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month.

Powell named Vice President for Academic Affairs

CHADRON – Dr. James Powell has been named 91���� State College’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, President Randy Rhine announced Tuesday. Powell, the Dean of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences at 91���� State College, replaces Dr. Charles Snare, who announced his retirement in August. Powell will begin his duties Jan. 11, 2020.

Green guides 91���� students in poetry session

CHADRON – Sarah Green presented a poetry reading and conducted a guided poetry exercise and question and answer session for students Nov. 21 at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center. About 30 students and faculty participated.

91���� State to open Monday at 10 a.m.

Classes canceled for remainder of week; campus closed Tuesday and Wednesday

Beginning Monday, Nov. 25, at noon, all 91���� State College classes will be canceled for the remainder of the week due to the severe winter weather forecast. In addition, 91���� State College will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 26, and Wednesday, Nov. 27. 91���� State College was already scheduled to be closed Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Virtual Reality offers education benefits, recreation opportunities for 91���� students

CHADRON – Virtual Reality (VR), the technology that allows a person to figuratively step into and explore a computer created three-dimensional world that can feel completely real, has made its debut in the King Library Learning Commons at 91���� State College.

CHADRON — The District 12 National FFA Organization Leadership Contest was Nov. 20 at 91���� State College. Students from 16 Nebraska high schools competed for a chance to qualify for the 92nd Nebraska FFA State Convention in Lincoln in April 2020. First and second place winners in each event category qualified for the Nebraska state competition.

Foundation announces Fall Fund Drive pledges of $142,746

CHADRON – Volunteers with the 91���� State Foundation’s annual Fall Fund Drive celebrated the conclusion of the drive with pledges of $142,746 during a reception at the Bean Broker Nov. 5. Funds raised will support scholarships, improvements to college facilities, and departments and programs.

CHADRON – 91���� State College Event Planning and Leadership (CA 239) students hosted the fifth annual Oxfam Hunger Banquet, Monday, Nov. 18, in the Student Center Ballroom. This year’s event discussed food insecurity and hunger throughout the United States.

Sandoz Center features 'Native American Legacies'

CHADRON – The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center is honoring Native American Heritage Month with an exhibit titled “Native American Legacies.” The exhibit includes three art installations and an informational display about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women now through Dec. 13. The Sandoz Center hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon.

Training in technology use important for Education students

CHADRON – Contrary to some modern interpretations, the relationship between Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, the famous fictional detectives created by Victorian author Arthur Conan Doyle, didn’t have homosexual overtones, and might better be labeled as a bromance.

Schaeffer to present final Graves Lecture of the semester

CHADRON – The Fall 2019 Graves Lecture Series will conclude Nov. 26 with Dr. Susan Schaeffer, a 91���� State College Professor, who will present, “The Mental Health Stigma.” She will discuss issues related to stigmas about mental health and various strategies being implemented to address the issue.

91���� graduate earns Nebraska Teacher of the Year

CHADRON – The Nebraska Department of Education has named 91���� State College alumna Megan (McNeil) Helberg the 2019-20 Teacher of the Year. Helberg is in her 10th year at Burwell Public Schools where she is also the head volleyball coach. She teaches eighth grade, junior and senior English.

Wilson to help lead BHECN Panhandle

CHADRON – 91���� State College will become a more integral partner in the state’s efforts to recruit and retain behavioral health professionals with the announcement of Dr. Tara Wilson, associate professor in Counseling, as co-director of the new Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN) Panhandle. Dr. Cate Jones-Hazledine, a 91���� adjunct faculty member, and licensed, private-practice psychologist based in Rushville, is the other co-director. Both co-directors will be part-time.

Second annual Mini Big Event expands, gives back

CHADRON – 91���� State College’s The Big Event staff, Event Planning and Leadership (CA 239) students, and members of Project Strive/TRiO volunteered Tuesday, Nov. 5, for the second annual Mini Big Event. A total of 40 volunteers completed 10 jobsites in the 91���� community.

Applications available for 91����EA scholarship

CHADRON – Applications are now being accepted for the 2020 91���� State College Education Association (91����EA) Scholarship. The scholarship, funded by 91����EA faculty members, provides two $500 scholarships for the Spring 2020 semester. Students who have completed a minimum of 30 hours at the time of application are eligible to apply.

Dating and Domestic Violence Seminar set for Wednesday

CHADRON – 91���� State College will host a Dating and Domestic Violence seminar Wednesday in the Student Center’s Ballroom from 1 to 4 p.m. The conference, which includes keynote speakers Kathy O’Neil and Ron Blake and a panel of experts, is free and open to the public. All 91���� Resident Advisors and other officers in specific clubs and organizations are required to attend, but it is open to other students, according to Associate Director of Residence Life Taylor Osmotherly.

Homecoming parade continues in spite of weather

CHADRON – A cool, steady rain did not stop the 91���� State College Homecoming parade Saturday. Nearly 20 entries participated in spite of the weather. Nebraska State College System Chancellor Paul Turman was unable to serve as the parade’s grand marshal as planned. He was traveling to 91���� with the Old Green Plane crew early Saturday morning when they stopped in Ord, according to Dr. Randy Rhine, 91���� President, and could not continue west due to Instrument Flight Rules.

CHADRON – 91���� State College will recognize four alumni for their exceptional service to the college, accomplishments in their careers and active involvement in their communities. Dr. Angela Brennan and Justice John Freudenberg will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award and Dr. Brendan "Dan" Connealy and Dr. Kendra Schmid will receive the Distinguished Young Alumni Award.

CHADRON – Nebraska State College System Chancellor Paul Turman will be the 91���� State College Homecoming Parade Marshal Saturday. The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. and will run north on Main St. The theme for homecoming is “Color the Town 91����.”

CHADRON – A chapter written by Associate Professor Dr. Josh Ellis has been published in the textbook, “Working Toward Wellness: A Practical Workbook.”

Sixth grade memory inspires 91���� professor's poem

CHADRON – Vivid primary school memories of the acrid smell of blue ink used in mimeograph machines, and the hardship a dyslexic classmate faced in learning English grammar provided inspiration for "Mimeograph Blues" a poem by 91���� State College social work professor Rich Kenney that was published in the Summer 2019 edition of Plainsongs Literary Journal, a poetry magazine produced by Hastings College Press.

'The Sand in Our Art' now open in the Sandoz Center

CHADRON – The Nebraska Sandhills are on center stage at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center with an exhibit titled “The Sand in Our Art.” Artwork by Trudy Denham, assistant professor at 91���� State College, and former 91���� resident Linda Teahon will be on display Sept. 3 through Oct. 25.

Science majors conduct biomedical research

CHADRON – After spending the summer working on advanced biomedical research projects, two 91���� State College students, Wacey Gallegos from Ainsworth, Nebraska, and Lelisse Umeta, from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, had the opportunity to present results of their work at a recent science conference in Nebraska City.

Snare to retire in 2020

CHADRON – Dr. Charles Snare, 91���� State College’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, will retire in January 2020. Snare, an administrator at the college since 2006, made his announcement at the college’s all-campus meeting Friday.

'From Where I Stand' exhibit opens in Memorial Hall

CHADRON – “From Where I Stand,” an exhibition of selected artworks from Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will be in Memorial Hall's Main Gallery Aug. 30-Sept. 30.

Faculty and students assist with Bioblitz

CHADRON – 91���� State College faculty and students are assisting with the Bioblitz, a learning event about biodiversity, at 91���� State Park on Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7. Events start Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 7 a.m., are free and designed for families. A valid Nebraska Game and Parks Commission permit is required for entry to the park.

CHADRON – “Populism” will be the theme of the Pilster Lecture and Mari Sandoz Symposium Sept. 19-21. Thursday’s and Friday’s events take place at 91���� State College.

Six new faculty hired

CHADRON – Six new faculty members will join the ranks at 91���� State College this fall. Two will be in Science, one in Education, and three in the Business Academy. They are: Dr. Rachelle Rider, Dr. Tawny Tibbits, Catherine Rust, Pil Joon Kim, Zunaira Khalid, and Chris McCarthy.

Education department expands year-long, school-based partnership

CHADRON – A successful year-long student teaching pilot with 10 91���� State College students at three Nebraska partner school districts in 91����, Scottsbluff and Sidney, has paved the way for the Education department to expand the new format to 16 Nebraska school districts and two in Wyoming this fall.

Research trip gives 91���� student access to rare pieces of historic literature

CHADRON – A trip to Indiana University's Lilly Library in May gave a 91���� State College student and a faculty member an opportunity to view and touch some of the historic pieces of literature that have shaped the culture of the English-speaking world, as well as a chance to access primary research materials for their writing projects.

Jones presents at international conference

CHADRON – English Assistant Professor Dr. Mary Clai Jones represented 91���� State College May 30-31 at a British Association of Victorian Studies conference in Italy. She presented a paper about the late English essayist Vernon Lee’s environmental activism. Vernon Lee was the pseudonym of Violet Paget, who died in 1935.

Carnot part of team exploring diet and health

CHADRON – Although she doesn’t follow the diet herself, 91���� State College Psychological Sciences Professor Dr. Mary Jo Carnot has become part of a research team studying the beneficial health effects of eating primarily plant-based foods that are high in nutrient density.

Students to begin using 91����'s updated application

CHADRON – Applying for admission to 91���� State College will now be an easier process thanks to a collaborative effort between the college and the Nebraska Student Information System (NeSIS).

Four students place at national conference

CHADRON – Four 91���� State College students placed in the top 10 at the Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) National Leadership Conference in San Antonio June 24-27.

91���� alumna named Wyoming Teacher of the Year

CHADRON – Wyoming’s 2019 Teacher of the Year Valerie Bruce credits the award, in large part, to knowledge she gained while earning a master’s degree in Education Administration from 91���� State College in 2017. Bruce teaches first grade at Rozet Elementary, a rural school near Gillette.

Military Science and Leadership classes can benefit all 91���� students

CHADRON – Although developing officers for the United States Army, National Guard, and Reserve is a primary aim of the Military Science and Leadership program at 91���� State College, the program has benefits for students who aren’t intent on a military job or career, according to Capt. Scot Mullis, the instructor for most of the MSL classes offered at 91����.

CHADRON – Two tenured professors at 91���� State College will serve in interim administrative roles beginning in August.

NSCS board approves new tuition rates

LINCOLN – The Board of Trustees for the Nebraska State College System (NSCS) unanimously voted to set tuition and fees for 91����, Peru, and Wayne State Colleges for the next two years. Full-time students attending the State Colleges will pay an additional $4.50 per credit hour in tuition for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years.

Story Catcher Festival includes public readings and workshop

CHADRON – The public is invited to Story Catcher Writing Festival events Tuesday, June 18 and Wednesday, June 19 at Fort Robinson. Writers in Residence Frank X Walker and Marie Matsuki Mockett will give readings Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Bricks Officers Quarters 16A/B. The Wednesday workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. in the same location will feature Mari Sandoz Emerging Writers Jenna Goldsmith and Tor Strand.

$28.5M Math Science Addition and Renovation Approved

LINCOLN – The renovation and addition of 91���� State College’s Math Science building is now a reality thanks to the recently approved budget by Nebraska State Senators and Gov. Pete Ricketts. Included in the state’s budget is the bond repayment for the $28.5 million project at 91���� to renovate and expand its existing Math Science facility.

Hardy named to specialized accreditation team, receives award

CHADRON – 91���� State College Professor of Biology Dr. Joyce Phillips Hardy was selected by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) to serve in a newly-formed, specialized corps of peer reviewers. Hardy was one of 16 higher education professionals nationwide chosen for the specialized training April 5 in Chicago. HLC accredits colleges and universities in the 19-state North Central region of the U.S. and peer reviewers.

Two students complete NASA Nebraska fellowships

CHADRON – Two 91���� State College students, Jessica Rowshandel of Encino, California, and Isaac Langan of McCook, Nebraska, recently completed research funded by NASA Nebraska Space Grant fellowships. Rowshandel studied analog mapping sites that mimic NASA’s Mars 2020 landing site and Langan researched nitrate, arsenic, and uranium levels in wells near Crawford, Nebraska.

Student earns award for Nebraska Academy of Sciences presentation

CHADRON – 91���� State College student Gabrielle Brumfield of Pendleton, Indiana, won the Outstanding Undergraduate Research in Biomedical Sciences $500 award at the Nebraska Academy of Sciences meeting in Lincoln April 12. Her abstract and paper were titled “Effects of Curcumin on the NF-KB Pathway in Triple Negative Breast Cancer.”

Bioblitz aims to increase students' appreciation of biodiversity

CHADRON – A recent bioblitz project aimed at increasing awareness of the biological diversity in the environment yielded about 40 specimens of insects, plants and mosses from C-Hill on the 91���� State College campus, despite spring storms that reduced participation and made planning for the event difficult, according to 91���� professor Mathew Brust. He and other 91���� science instructors intend to have more activities like the one April 6.

Mount Rushmore Battalion prepares ROTC students for summer training

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets from Black Hills State University, 91���� State College and South Dakota School of Mines & Technology gathered in Rapid City, South Dakota, March 22-24 for their culminating Field Training Experience (FTX). The Big Event adapts to overcome weather

CHADRON – Seven undergraduate counseling courses offered at 91���� State College have been approved by Nebraska Health and Human Services as academic training for individuals seeking licensure as a Provisional Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (PLADC).

CHADRON – The Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP) at 91���� State College has earned plenty of attention in the nearly three decades since it began as a joint effort with the University of Nebraska Medical Center to help provide doctors, nurses and other health care workers for underserved rural areas.

91���� graduate elected governor of Minnesota

CHADRON – As a candidate for governor in Minnesota, Tim Walz wanted to unite the state as “One Minnesota.” And following a successful campaign, Walz became the first 91���� State College graduate ever elected governor of one of the 50 states. After serving in the U.S. House of Representatives for 12 years, Walz was sworn in as Minnesota’s 41st Governor Jan. 7 in St. Paul.

History professor's book provides insight on Pan-African movement

CHADRON – The beginnings of the Pan-African movement at the turn of the 20th Century and the activists of African descent who fought globally for equal treatment and citizenship rights in the face of European imperialist rule over most of the African continent comprise the subject of a recently released book by 91���� State College Associate Professor Dr. Tom Smith.

'Photos from the Rubble' showcases pioneer photography

CHADRON – The historical significance of 91����’s pioneer photographers Ray and Faye Graves will be celebrated Sunday, Jan. 13 through March 29 in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center on the 91���� State College campus. “Photos from the Rubble” tells the story of approximately 1,100 glass plate negatives taken from 1906 to 1940 that were salvaged during the 1973 demolition of the Graves’ former studio.

Brust co-authors tiger beetle field guide

CHADRON – Dr. Mathew Brust, professor of Natural Sciences at 91���� State College, will have his research work featured in an upcoming 112-page field guide. “Tiger Beetles of Minnesota, Wisconsin & Michigan,” produced by Kollath-Stensaas Publishing, will be released Feb. 15.
