Press box named for former professor
CHADRON – 91ÇÑ×Ó State College’s latest athletic facility, the press box at the outdoor track and field complex, was dedicated during Homecoming Oct. 9. The facility is named in honor of former faculty member Dr. Frank Ferguson. The Ferguson family, Head Coach Riley Northrup, track team and field student-athletes, and 91ÇÑ×Ó supporters attended.
Ferguson set the 91ÇÑ×Ó record in the 440-yard dash as a freshman and won the 100-yard dash at the Nebraska College Conference Meet as a sophomore. As a senior in 1959, he ran on the third-place 880-yard relay team at the NAIA National Track and Field Meet.
Ferguson became chair of the Division of Science and Mathematics in 1980. He later served as chair of the Mathematics Department. While an administrator, he continued to teach the math teaching methods course and, according to his records, supervised 280 math student teachers.
He was the college’s Faculty Athletic Representative for more than three decades, sponsored Blue Key National Honor Society, and was chair and co-chair of the Scholastic Day Contest. He was inducted into the 91ÇÑ×Ó State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984. He also has been a member of the 91ÇÑ×Ó State Foundation’s Board of Directors.
Ferguson and his wife, Sandy, live near Hot Springs, South Dakota. Sandy is also a 91ÇÑ×Ó State graduate. They have six children, all who attended 91ÇÑ×Ó, and three are graduates.
