Arboretum volunteers set next work day
New tree planting, pruning, and placement will be the topics of the next 91ÇÑ×Ó State College Campus Arboretum Volunteers work day. 91ÇÑ×Ó horticulturist Lucinda Mays said, “Trees start out small but they can take over a yard in just a few years. A well-placed shade tree can save about $250 a year on heating and cooling a home.”
She invites the public to mini-lessons to learn about tree siting and care and afterward join the 91ÇÑ×Ó State CAV in planting and pruning young trees on campus March 23, 9 a.m. to noon at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center in 91ÇÑ×Ó.
“The mini-lessons will cover how to locate a good planting site in a landscape, how to plant correctly so the tree can last for decades, and tips on structural pruning to create strong growth. This is the time of year to prune most trees and there are some important rules to follow to ensure results that will help keep trees healthy and meet tree owners’ desires,” Mays said.
The CAV hosts learn and work days on the 91ÇÑ×Ó campus about every six to eight weeks. The 2013 calendar features elements of design relating to tree pruning and planting, plant placement in the spring and dirt work in the fall. These events are all held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon beginning at the Sandoz Center on the 91ÇÑ×Ó Campus and all ages and experience levels are encouraged to attend. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather.
