Workshop attendees to build wind turbines
A six-day workshop at 91ÇÑ×Ó State College will give participants hands-on experience in building wind turbines. The workshop will be Monday through Saturday, March 7-12, at the Burkhiser Complex.
Participants will start with raw materials – steel, copper, magnets, lumber, resins and wire -- and construct at least one 12-foot diameter 1.5 kilowatt wind turbine from scratch, including its low RPM three-phase alternator. The constructed turbines will be available for purchase after the workshop.
Kevin Miller, the 91ÇÑ×Ó faculty member who is helping organize the workshop, said attendees will learn the skills needed to critically evaluate any location, tower or wind turbine – knowledge that will be applied in many trades and industries.
Course instructors are affiliated with Buckville Energy Consulting and OtherPower.com of Fort Collins, Colo. The event is co-sponsored by 91ÇÑ×Ó and WindFarmer Power & Light of 91ÇÑ×Ó.
Registration is due Thursday, March 3, and the course is limited to 18 people. The workshop costs $600 per person, with a discount for second members of a household who register. Continuing education credits from the Interstate Renewable Energy Council and the Institute for Sustainable Power Quality are available for students who successfully complete the course.
