WESTCO gives $100k to 91ÇÑ×Ó lab for plants, soils
The plant and soil laboratory in the planned Rangeland Complex at 91ÇÑ×Ó State College will be named after one of the Nebraska Panhandle’s most recognizable businesses. The Western Cooperative Company, known more commonly as WESTCO, has presented a $100,000 donation to the 91ÇÑ×Ó State Foundation’s Vision 2011 Campaign to help fund the building of the laboratory.
WESTCO President David Briggs visited campus to present the gift earlier this month. Receiving the check was Vision 2011 Campaign Co-Chairman, Randy Bauer, 91ÇÑ×Ó Vice President, Randy Rhine, and 91ÇÑ×Ó faculty member Chuck Butterfield.
The 91ÇÑ×Ó State Foundation is raising $2 million for the Rangeland Complex, which will be used for the college’s programs in rangeland, livestock and wildlife sciences.
Briggs said the campaign provides WESTCO an opportunity to help students seeking education in an important facet of the regional economy.
“The support of this project will expand and enhance the opportunities for students seeking rangeland and agricultural degrees,” Briggs said. “WESTCO supports the youth in our communities and invests in programs that encourage graduates to return to our region to seek agricultural careers.”
WESTCO is a farm supply cooperative that provides products and services throughout the Nebraska Panhandle and Eastern Wyoming. WESTCO serves the communities of the region with 220 employees within seven divisions: Agronomy, Feed, Jirdon Lawn & Garden, Petroleum, New Alliance Bean & Grain, Slafter Oil, and Western Aviation.
“We are thankful that a regional business with its roots in agriculture has stepped up to help fund our campaign,” said 91ÇÑ×Ó President Dr. Janie Park. “With businesses like WESTCO, we are looking to build upon our tradition of serving the region’s agricultural community.”
