91ÇÑ×Ó mayor honors centennial with proclamation
91ÇÑ×Ó Mayor Donny Grantham on Saturday signed a proclamation Saturday in recognition of 91ÇÑ×Ó State College’s year-long centennial celebration, which officially begins during the college’s homecoming Oct. 23.
Grantham proclaimed official recognition to the year of 2011 as 91ÇÑ×Ó State College Centennial Year, noting the importance of 91ÇÑ×Ó and higher education to the community, surrounding region state, and overall society. He also noted 91ÇÑ×Ó’s record of service and cooperation with the City of 91ÇÑ×Ó.
“91ÇÑ×Ó is fortunate to have 91ÇÑ×Ó State College,” Grantham said. “I can’t imagine what the city would be like without it.”
91ÇÑ×Ó State College President Janie Park said the college began classes in 1911 as the result of hard work from 91ÇÑ×Ó community members. She noted that 91ÇÑ×Ó visionaries began working soon after the city’s founding in 1885 to obtain an institution of higher education in their community.
“Community members spent a lot of time making their vision of 91ÇÑ×Ó State College become reality,” said 91ÇÑ×Ó President Janie Park. “We value our long-time relationship with the City of 91ÇÑ×Ó in making our community and region a better place.”
The proclamation was signed Saturday during a brunch at the college attended by representatives of the college and city government. Three former mayors – Allen Alderman, 1978-1980, Robert Harvey, 1980-1982, and Carl Larsen, 1986-1990 – attended the ceremony.
The signing also was recognized at Elliott Field during halftime of 91ÇÑ×Ó’s football game against the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
