Students spruce up 91ÇÑ×Ó's landmark C
If the C on 91ÇÑ×Ó’s C-Hill looks a little brighter this week, credit the work of about a dozen students and employees of 91ÇÑ×Ó State College. Members of 91ÇÑ×Ó State’s Project Strive/TRiO program trekked the hill Saturday to give the C its annual dressing up.
Dr. Rex Cogdill, interim director of Project Strive, said the project, which was completed in under two hours, took less time Saturday than it did last April when the student support group assumed the annual duty as a community service project.
After clearing the letter of debris, the workers dumped 35 gallons of paint over its surface and used rollers to cover the area.
Following the project, the group gathered in Wilson Park for a barbecue.
The tradition of 91ÇÑ×Ó State students painting the C dates back to soon after the letter was placed on the hill south of campus in 1924. The effort to create it was led by T.A.F. Williams, a college mathematics instructor.
Students taking part in the project were Colt Black Bull of 91ÇÑ×Ó, Amber Halstead of Gering, Tyler Nichols of Bridgeport, Mandi Painter of Valentine, Klara Sisson of Ainsworth, Chance Whelchel of Harrisburg and Rachel Wickman of Eli.
The Project Strive staff members who assisted were Cogdill, Marilyn Caparoon, Jo Hunter and Amanda Nipp.
Caparoon's teenage daughter, Tavie, and Painter's toddler, Kennedy, also helped.
