Students teach Kenwood kids about 'the great outdoors'
Students enrolled in a 91ÇÑ×Ó State College course gave children from 91ÇÑ×Ó’s Kenwood Elementary School a jump start on summer fun this week.
About 10 college students and 20 children from Mark Rutter’s fourth-grade class gathered at the Thompson Nature Preserve on the west end of the 91ÇÑ×Ó State campus Tuesday. They spent the morning playing outdoor games and receiving tips on how to assemble a tent, catch a fish, shoot a bow and arrow, paddle a canoe, tie knots and pitch horseshoes.
“Both the elementary and the college students benefit from this project,” said Tom Andersen, instructor of the Camp Counseling course and 91ÇÑ×Ó’s head women’s basketball coach. “Our students gained hands-on experience working with children, and hopefully the children learned some valuable outdoor skills. We also had a lot of fun.”
The two-credit-hour course, which is designed to teach students about camping and how to lead an elementary camping group, is part of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation curriculum at 91ÇÑ×Ó.
The temperature had reached 70 degrees by mid-morning, making ideal weather conditions for the activity. The event concluded with grilled frankfurters for all the students in nearby Wilson Park.
